THE DREAM MUST BE CONTINUED

Richard Hovanissian opened his Oct. 18 talk at Marquette University Law School by reflecting on this year’s centennial observation of the Armenian Genocide. The UCLA professor emeritus commented on the amount of good press and academic conferences the Armenian cause received in 2015, Pope Francis’ proclamation, and the unity shown by the Armenian community. But the events of a century ago and their ongoing implications, rather than the commemoration, were the primary subject of his talk.

A NEW SHEPHERD FOR GOD’S FLOCK

Last Saturday was a powerful, unforgettable day. A new priest means a new chapter, a new outpouring of grace, a fresh wind of the Spirit. Just as a baptism fills a family with joy, just as a wedding brings celebration, the St. Sahag community, our Eastern Diocese, and the entire Armenian Church rejoice because God has raised up a shepherd to lead His flock.

BIRTH OF RAFAEL DE NOGALES MÉNDEZ

Rafael de Nogales Méndez was a soldier of fortune, adventurer, and witness of the Armenian Genocide.

He was born in San Cristóbal, Venezuela, on October 14, 1877. His father sent him to study in Europe, where he attended universities in Germany, Belgium, and Spain, and learned several languages. He was attracted to the military profession, and he began to travel where the news of war took him. He fought on the Spanish side during the Spanish–American War of 1898.

In 1902, he participated in a failed attempt to overthrow Venezuelan dictator Cipriano Castro involving an expedition aboard the schooner La Libertad.
