INTO THE DEEP

Yesterday, I visited the ancient Haghartsin Monastery in the Tavush region of Armenia — a holy place where monks once prayed and sang, where faith has endured storms of history. I walked to a quiet corner where Khachadour Daronatsi Vartabed rests, the 12th-century monk who gave us the hymn we sing at the very beginning of the Badatak: Khoroord Khorin, “Deep Mystery.” Both words spring from the same root: khor, meaning “deep.”

Even the Armenian word for meditation — khorhel/խորհել — comes from that same place of depth. From the very first notes of the Badarak, Daronatsi whispers something essential to our souls: Go deep, meditate, step fully into the mystery. The Badarak is not meant to be rushed or skimmed like the headlines of our day; it is an invitation to sink into the mystery of God.

Lord Jesus once told Peter, “Put out into the deep water” (Luke 5:4). Peter and the disciples had been fishing all night and caught nothing. They were exhausted and ready to go home. But Jesus said, “Go deeper.” When they did, the nets came up overflowing, so full they could hardly lift them.

Sometimes, life teaches us to stay in the shallow waters, to live on the surface. We scroll, we rush, we react. But God is saying, “Come deeper.” There’s peace beneath the surface noise. There’s clarity when you quiet the distractions. There’s strength when you pause and let His presence sink in.

The miracle of the fish didn’t happen on the shore; it happened where it was deep. And the miracle of our faith isn’t found in living distracted and hurried. It’s found when we dare to go deeper with Him. That’s where peace replaces panic, clarity replaces confusion, gratitude replaces complaining, and God begins to work in the quiet places of your soul.

So the next time you hear Khoroord Khorin, go deep, step fully into the mystery, and sing with a heart that listens and lets the words sink into your soul. Watch with wonder and let each moment draw you closer to God.

Push your boat out a little farther. Trust the One who meets you in the deep. And get ready, because when you go deeper with God, He will fill your nets in ways you never imagined.
