PERSISTANCE IN FAITH

Today, we remember St. James of Nisibis. He is among the most beloved saints in the Armenian Church. Medieval Armenian authors claim that James was St. Gregory Illuminator’s first cousin.

St. James is known for his divine vision on Mount Ararat. According to tradition, while preaching near Nisibis, St. James learned that some doubted Noah’s Ark’s story. Determined to show proof, he embarked on a journey to Mount Ararat’s peak to find the ark’s remains.

During his climb, he grew tired and paused to rest. Despite continuing his journey, he found himself repeatedly returning to his original resting spot. Despite this, James’s faith remained unshaken. Eventually, while asleep, an angel visited him in a dream, presenting him with a piece of wood from the Ark, rewarding his steadfast faith and endurance.

Saint James’ journey up the mountain is a metaphor for our own spiritual journey. He faced obstacles and challenges, yet he never gave up. His goal was not just to reach the summit but to seek a closer communion with God. Similarly, our journey is marked by faith and trust in God, pushing us through difficult paths.

The Bible reminds us in 2 Chronicles 15:7, “But you, take courage! Do not let your hands be weak, for your work shall be rewarded.” These words should echo in our hearts whenever we feel overwhelmed by the trials of life. God does not promise a journey free from hardship, but He assures us of His unwavering support and the ultimate reward for our perseverance.

May we draw strength from the example of Saint James and the promise of God in our lives. “So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up.” (Galatians 6:9).
