THE KEY WITHIN

By Bishop Mesrop Parsamyan

There’s an old story about a man who was down on his hands and knees under a streetlamp one evening, searching for something. A passerby saw him and asked, “What are you looking for?” The man replied, “I lost my key.” Wanting to help, the passerby got down and began searching as well.

After a few minutes, he asked, “Are you sure you lost it here?” The man said, “No, I lost it inside my house.” Puzzled, the passerby asked, “Then why are you looking out here?” The man smiled and said, “Because there’s more light out here.”

That, my friends, is how many of us live. We’re looking for the answers to life’s deepest questions—joy, peace, fulfillment, purpose—but we’re looking in all the wrong places. We search under the brightest lights: career success, popularity, relationships, material comfort. We think, If I just land that job, I’ll be happy. If I just meet the right person, I’ll feel whole. I’ll finally find peace.

But what if the thing we’re looking for was never out there to begin with? What if it was always inside?

Jesus says something remarkable in Luke 17:21: “The kingdom of God is within you.” That means you don’t have to go searching far and wide for what you’ve lost. You don’t have to chase happiness, strive for fulfillment, or wait for someone else to bring you peace. It’s already inside you.

When God created you, He didn’t just give you breath. He gave you His breath. He placed within you the spark of His Spirit, the seed of His kingdom, the power to overcome, the peace that passes all understanding. He placed in you a compass for truth, a longing for grace, and a capacity for love that mirrors His own.

Friends, don’t waste your life searching under the wrong streetlamp. Don’t be fooled by the bright lights of the world—they often cast long shadows. Instead, come back to the quiet house of your heart. That’s where the key is. That’s where Christ waits to meet you.

And when you turn inward, when you listen for His voice within, you will find that joy is not a place, peace is not a possession, and purpose is not a position. They are the fruits of a heart rooted in God’s presence.
