THE SONG OF GRATITUDE

By Bishop Mesrop Parsamyan

The greatest hymn we can offer God is our life’s melody. And the key to singing life’s song with passion and skill, as the Holy Scriptures emphasize, is the profound sense of gratitude. When the primary melody of our song is our gratitude for God’s goodness, the hymn of our life will resonate like a joy-filled chorus.

St. Paul writes: “Be careful, then, how you live … understand what the will of the Lord is … be filled with the Spirit, as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to one another, singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts, giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 5:15-20).

Gratitude isn’t just a response to the blessings we receive; it’s a way of life. It’s about seeing the beauty in every sunrise, the miracle in every heartbeat, and the hand of God in every twist and turn of our journey. When we cultivate a heart of gratitude, we become attuned to the symphony of life, and our song becomes a sweet offering to the heavens.

But why is gratitude so crucial? Because it shifts our perspective. In a world often clouded by negativity and despair, gratitude is like a beacon of light, illuminating the path before us and reminding us of the countless reasons we have to rejoice. It’s easy to focus on what we lack, on our struggles and shortcomings, but when we choose gratitude, we open our eyes to the abundance that surrounds us.

Think about it: every breath we take, every beat of our heart, is a gift from above. The very fact that we are alive, that we have the opportunity to love, to laugh, to dream, is a cause for celebration. And when we acknowledge these blessings with a grateful heart, our song becomes more than just a melody; it becomes a symphony of praise, echoing through the halls of eternity.

Indeed, life is like a song, and it doesn’t matter if it’s a long or short tune. What truly matters is how we sing it, with a grateful heart, with “psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.” Let’s make every note count!
