A NATURAL CATHEDRAL

Standing on the deck of the Maid of the Mist, surrounded by the misty veil that Niagara Falls generously offers, I found myself enveloped in a natural cathedral. The cascading water roared like a heavenly chorus, each drop a note in a divine symphony. The sheer power and magnitude of the falls were awe-inspiring, to say the least.

At that moment, prayer seemed both inevitable and spontaneous. How could one not pray when faced with such splendor? The falls acted like a grand altar, constantly offering its waters to the sky and the mist like incense, rising and filling the air with its refreshing scent.

The spectacle reminded me of the words from the Book of Psalms, “The heavens are telling the glory of God, and the firmament proclaims his handiwork.” (Psalm 19:1). Standing there, it felt as though creation itself was glorifying God, each drop of water singing its own hymn of praise as it united with the river below. The experience was a vivid reminder that God’s grandeur is echoed in the intricacies of His creation, whether in the majesty of a mountain range or the intricacy of a single leaf.

As I rode away on the boat, my clothes damp but my spirit soaring, I considered how the falls could be seen as a metaphor for God’s unending grace and mercy—constantly flowing, incredibly powerful, and perpetually renewing. Just as the waters of Niagara are constantly replenished, so too are we refreshed and revitalized by God’s love and mercy.

Encounters like these remind us that sometimes the most profound spiritual insights come when we simply stop and behold God’s wonders. May we all find moments that help us pause, appreciate, and ultimately glorify the magnificent Creator who gifted us with wonders.
